Super kids friendly, non-spicy, easy satay recipes to make! Kecap Manis, an Indonesian word is literally translated to “Sweet Soy Sauce”.

Kecap manis (pronounced KEH-chup MAH-nees) is an Indonesian sweet soy sauce with a molasses consistency and a dark brown color. Flavored with garlic, star anise, soybeans, and palm sugar, the sauce is more syrupy and complex than commonplace soy sauce.

Typically sold in Asian markets, kecap manis can be used as a condiment or marinade for satays and grilled meats. It is also a staple ingredient in many traditional dishes of Indonesia.

These satays are also great thrown on family BBQs and requires very little ingredients to put together. Yet it has a distinctive slighly caramelized flavour derived from the palm sugar in the kecap manis. The girls never really handled raw meat before, so it is quite a chuckle to watch them cringe by the texture while they marinade and skewer those meat pieces onto the sticks.

Try them for an easy family recipe, and have it served with Easy Flatbreads and Mango, Avocado Salsa! It will be a tasty, healthy, Asian taco affair!

 

Kecap Manis Satay (chicken) - Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 4 x chicken breast or 8 x chicken thigh fillet (800g), excess fat trimmed, cut into 2cm cubes.
  • 3 garlic cloves, grated
  • 1 tbsp ginger, grated
  • 1 red chili, deseeded and chopped finely
  • 1/4 cup kecap manis
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1 tbsp cumin powder
  • 12-15 bamboo skewers, soaked in cold water for 15 minutes

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180C
  2. Place all the marinade ingredients into a bowl and mix gently. Add the chicken cubes into the mixture, cover with clean wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to develop the flavours.
  3. Thread the chicken evenly among skewers. Brush with oil to lightly grease.
  4. Place on griller, turning it over once, for 4 minutes each side or until charred and cooked through.
  5. Divide the chicken skewers among serving plates and serve with the grilled flatbread with a salad of your choice.

Note:

Serve these with flatbread, rice with salad / vegetables for a wholesome meal.
