It’s easy to fall into a routine. It’s easy to remain where you are today. Being a mum doesn’t mean you stopped living for yourself. Being a mum doesn’t mean you have to live in your children’s shadows. Being a mum doesn’t mean you are just somebody’s wife.
There was a phase in my life where I lived in a cocoon, stopped being aware of the latest blockbusters or top 100 billboard charts. I don’t know what’s the latest fashion trends nor cared about the latest world news. For 3 years, I threw myself into motherhood and obsessed about my babies. For mothers who has breastfed, you would also know that this task alone can consume you completely for the first 6 months of post-pregnancy till you get the hang of it. My life evolves around wiping babies bottoms, dealing with toddler’s tantrums, keeping peas out of little buggers orifices, stop busy hands from breaking things and keeping my pediatrician appointments. Besides looking forward to 6pm wine to keep sane while I deal with those wombats’ dinner fuss and mess, my other respite was exercising. For cardio, I swam and skipped. For toning, I did my yoga. I tried to exercise twice weekly.
As my eldest started nursery (thank god for early learning!) I also went back to work part-time. Learn a new skill and started my work in real estate. Referrals starting mounting as I spend more hours at work. Juggling family and work becomes stressful. There was little time for exercise. I became sluggish and unhappy. Clothes getting tighter. Husband’s not getting any action as I wasn’t feeling sexy but constantly tired. That’s when a friend introduced me to Shaun T’s Insanity workouts. It was easy to fall in love with his good looks, amazing body and energy. In my first fitness test, I almost passed out and swallowed my own vomit (so hardcore right!!). Yet in due time, he got me into tuck jumps, plyometric and anaerobic exercises, my love for HIIT. I joined a running group and the gym. I started counting calories and being aware of my diet. Today, I eat a relatively low carbohydrate diet interspersed with once weekly “dirty carbs day” or cheatdays, to keep my cravings low and manageable. But I never stop working out daily if I can, even on holidays. Being consistent is important so the inputs and outputs are always balanced.
So here’s some tips to get your SEX back:
S – Start with a mindset to change. Start exercising, begin with small steps/goals and build it up progressively. Set specific day and time for exercising. Mine is always in the mornings where I slip into my active wear and promise myself I can’t get out of it until I have exercised. Start a healthy meal plan.
E – Engage with other like minded people to keep motivation high, join a gym, fitness community or follow motivating Instagram celebrities and Bloggers. Hire a personal trainer. Buy into a fitness movement eg. Shaun T Insanity, Kayla Itsines etc.
X – eXplore new horizons, new places, new sports. Once you have engaged the above, join a race or a running/cycling group. Explore the world with your new found energy! Climb mountains or take up a new sport! Its amazing how a strong body can empower you and make you feel almost invincible.
Once you have begun the above, the positive high post exercise will engulf you and it can become addictive, in a good way. You will see progressive transformation to your body and the confidence (and bedtime action) guarantees to return!!
